Buyers spent more money last week for both numismatic and bullion United States Mint coins.
190,000 ounces of bullion American Gold Eagles left U.S. Mint inventories in May. That marks the highest level since 216,000 were sold in June 1999.
Mint authorized purchasers also snapped up 70,500 American Gold Buffalos, bringing the total ounces of bullion gold May sales to 260,500. Only one month since the Mint’s bullion program launched in 1986 recorded better, and that was January 1999 with 281,000 ounces of gold coins.
Bullion American Silver Eagles scored their own record in May at 3,636,500 — the highest level since December 1986. 15,676,500 have sold this year as of June 2, which already makes 2010 the third best year for the series.
Collector proof and uncirculated First Spouse Gold Coins experienced a bit of a setback. At their highest price points in history, weekly sales were anemic. Uncirculated Margaret Taylor gold pieces gave back 249, paring their previous weekly gains significantly. The Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin launches Thursday at noon ET, which means the Tylers’ will go off sale. Their scarce mintage levels look to be potentially attractive for sellers down the road.
2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets™ appear in the sales tables for the first time this week. 73,756 were ordered between their release last Thursday through to Sunday. These are substantially better beginning numbers than the silver quarters sets from last year, which came in at 55,160 between their Monday to Sunday sales. (Read America the Beautiful Quarters Sets Debut Strong for more.)
In a notable mention, clad America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Sets topped 100,000. Their weekly increase dropped only slightly, rising 17,578 compared to the prior 18,391. The sets were released on May 13.
Stay tuned for next week’s report which will provide the opening sales figures for three new US Mint products that have or will launch this week. They include:
- the aforementioned 24-karat Pierce spouse gold coins,
- Yellowstone National Park Quarter rolls and bags, and
- the 24-karat Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin
