U.S. Mint coin sets and coin covers showed the best week-over-week sales while demand weakened for collector gold and silver coins.
Bullion coins, however, continue to race with September already the second best sales month of the year for silver coins and headed that way for gold coins.
Sales Debut of Harrison Presidential $1 Coin Covers
Benjamin Harrison Presidential $1 Coin Covers launched last week. Their debut sales came in at 11,658 units — lower than the sales starts of past coin covers.
The new release did raise interest for the series as thirteen of fourteen older coin covers registered slightly improved sales. In the same category, decent shares of Presidential $1 coin rolls were stronger as well.
As for Benjamin Harrison Presidential $1 Coin Covers, they were the second most popular numismatic product.

- 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set (+811 to 7,358)
- 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (+641 to 112,172)
Overall, 67 products outperformed their previous weekly sales compared to 61 previously. Six products logged unit sales of more than 1,000 versus the 11 noted in the last sales report.
2012 Proof Silver Set and Other Sets
As the fourth best-selling numismatic product last week, 2012 Proof Silver Sets topped the 300,000 milestone with the help of a 4,088 weekly increase. Last year’s 2011 Proof Silver Sets remain on sale. In a comparison, they climbed 296 to 567,141.
Sets were among the better sellers overall — not just those shown in the top-ten list above. Sales were improved almost across the board if a set’s name had "quarter" in it. This includes 13 of 14 quarter three-coin sets, all circulating and uncirculated quarter coin sets and the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set.
Several of the major proof and uncirculated sets shined brighter as well.
Collector Gold and Silver Coins
Two straight weeks of raised gold coin prices combined with recently weaker precious metals proved dampening for collector gold and silver coins.
Just three collector gold coins registered modestly higher week-over-week sales — the 2012-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle (up 149 versus 130), the 2012 $5 Proof Star-Spangled Banner Gold Coin (up 100 against 93) and the 2011 Proof Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coin (up 20 versus 17).
In silver coins, there was only one stand-out. The 2012 Uncirculated Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar advanced 93 to 38,298. Last week’s sales report had it up 57.
After several consecutive appearances, America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins were notably absent from the list of overachievers. That should change in next week’s sales report since the five ounce Hawai’i Volcanoes silver coin launched this past Monday.
US Coin Sales: Bullion Gold and Silver Coins
Activity soared yet again for investment-grade gold and silver coins. Eagles are on fire.
- American Eagle silver coins surged 1,264,000 in the last seven days to hit 3,225,000 for the month. Only January logged better monthly sales at 6,107,000 — the second best month ever in the Eagle’s 26-year history.
- American Eagle gold coins advanced by 23,000 ounces to stand at 61,500 ounces for the month. The two better months were in March at 62,500 ounces and January at 127,000 ounces.
The latest weekly sales period covers through to Wednesday, September 26, 2012.

2012 Proof American Eagles are up over 700,000. 2012 S Proof American Eagles are only up to around 290,000 The question I have is why people aren’t going after the 2012 S Proof American Eagle? The mintage will end
up less than half and it only costs $15 more than the regular proof after deducting the $5 bill.
I really hope they stop selling the coin & currency set at 50,000. How much longer is the U.S. Mint going to sell the 2011 W Uncirculated Silver Eagle? It’s almost 2013, for crying out loud!
The proof SAE topped out at 950,000 last year and 860,000 in 2010.
Joe – Why do you care? Did you think you were getting a low mintage coin when you bought yours? Personally I don’t know why anybody would buy uncirculated coins anymore. They’re flat versions of the proof coins which are for the most part much more attractive and shinier. The difference in cost is almost negligible at $9 for the SAE. I suppose if you’re investing in silver the difference matters but then why aren’t you buying from a dealer with an even lower markup?
Homer, Never assume a coin will be a sure profit. It just depends on collecor intrest and a lot of people were upset by the way the Mint handled the Coin and Currency Set issue! To all, In case you missed my other post: I just got a letter from the Department Of The Treasury updating the Status of the 2012 Spouse Program and Apologizing for the Delay. Once Problems are Resolved both the Proof and the Uncirculated coins will be Struck at the West Point “W” Mint. They have not Yet announced the On-Sales-Dates. The Letter was Dated September… Read more »
Have to keep the Silver Eagle collection complete, Jim. That’s why I buy the uncirculated Silver Eagles. I also like to see the low mintage.
Mailed my 25th Ann Silver Eagle set to NGC today, for new retro holders. THanks RonnieBGood for the information about the new retro holders. This will be a nice addition to my NGC Silver Eagle collection.
