Demand in November surged for American Eagle Gold and Silver Coins

November sales of American Eagle gold and silver coins surged over the previous month and the same period last year, finalized sales figures from the United States Mint show.

November sales of American Eagle gold coins totaled 136,500 ounces, jumping 131.4% higher than October and 232.9% above last year’s sales during the same time. The 22-karat gold coins logged the strongest November since 1998 and the best month since July 2010.

Year-do-date sales stand at 677,000 ounces. That is the weakest since safe-haven demand for bullion coins jump-started in 2008 as a result of the Great Recession. January through November periods reached 934,500 ounces in 2011, surged to 1,160,500 ounces in 2010, rallied 1,193,500 ounces in 2009 and totaled 684,500 ounces in 2008.

November sales of American Eagle silver coins hit 3,159,500 for a modest 0.2% gain over the previous month and a soaring 128.3% increase from last year’s November. There were two stronger sales months this year for the 99.9% pure silver coins. Those were September’s 3,255,000 and January’s 6,107,000, with the latter ranking as the second highest monthly total since the Silver Eagles debuted in 1986.

Year-to-date sales are 32,107,500 for the third best eleven-month sales period in the Silver Eagle’s 27-year history. The two better years were in 2011 and 2010 with respective same-month totals of 37,859,500 and 32,890,500.

November sales of 24-karat American Buffalo gold coins reached 16,500. That tops the prior month by 50.0% and last year’s November by 94.1%. The one better month in 2012 was March with 26,000 coins.

Year-to-date sales are 124,000. That is down from the 153,500 sold by the U.S. Mint during the first eleven months of 2011.

Finally, November sales of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins were 19,700 coins for 98,500 ounces. That is the second highest monthly total in 2012, behind October’s count of 22,100 coins.

  • 2012 El Yunque National Forest Silver Coins at 1,800 for an all-time total of 19,900
