Proof 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coins
Debut sales for the gold, silver and clad 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coins show collectors continue to prefer proofs.

Starting sales figures are in for United States Mint products featuring the 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coins. In related news, prices for some of them could increase on Wednesday, March 27.

On Thursday, March 21, the U.S. Mint launched $5 gold, $1 silver and 50-cent clad coins depicting U.S. Army 5-Star Generals Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, Henry Arnold, George Marshall and Omar N. Bradley.

Available are uncirculated and proof versions. There is also a three-coin set that has one proof of each denomination. (For more information, read this news article about the coins.)

In the opening days and true to historical norms, the proofs garnered the most attention. The sales table below breaks down the numbers.

*Sales figures are as of Monday, March 25, 2013. **Sales of the commemorative coins are nowhere near their established mintages but the Three-Coin Proof Set does have a product limit of 10,000. Almost half of them are gone.

Potential Price Increases for 5-Star Generals Gold Coins and Proof Set

U.S. Mint numismatic gold coins may have their prices adjusted weekly depending on the trend of the market value of gold. Current pricing for the commemorative gold products is based on an average weekly London fixing that falls within $1,550.00 to $1,599.99 an ounce. Gold prices have pushed above the range in recent days.

If the London gold fixings for this Wednesday AM is higher than $1,561.45 an ounce and that of the Wednesday PM is above $1,600.00 an ounce, then the following price increases will kick in Wednesday at around 12:00 noon ET.

Update: U.S. Mint gold product prices did increase Wednesday as the AM fix was $1,591.00 and the PM fix was $1,603.

Additionally, U.S. Mint First Spouse Gold Coins would increase $25 with the proofs up to $1,015 from $990 and the uncirculated coins up to $995 from $970.

5-Star Generals coins are the second series of commemoratives for 2013. On February 28, 2013, the U.S. Mint released commemorative coins honoring the centennial anniversary of the Girl Scouts of USA. Opening five-day sales for those were 9,331 for the proof and 12,293 for the uncirculated. Their latest weekly sales show the proof gaining 5,701 for a new total of 58,746 and the uncirculated coins increasing 2,292 for a total of 23,366.

Prices Increase Friday for Girl Scouts Silver Dollars

Introductory pricing for Girl Scouts Silver Dollars end at 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday, March 29, 2013. After that time, each will advance $5. The proof silver dollar will go up to $59.95 and the uncirculated silver dollar will increase to $55.95.
