Today, March 28, the clad 2013 United States Mint Proof Set® debuted at a price of $31.95.
Coins in the set are in proof quality and produced at the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco. As such, they bear the ‘S’ mint mark. Though each is composed from the same base metals as their circulating counterparts, they differ with their mirror-like backgrounds and highly detailed frosted designs.
Included in the annual set are a total of fourteen coins. Of those, ten feature reverse designs unique to this year. These include the five 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters®, the four 2013 Presidential $1 Coins and the 2013 Native American $1 Coin.
A Listing of Coins in the 2013 Proof Set
By denomination and design, the 2013 Proof Set has the following fourteen proof coins:

- 2013-S Theodore Roosevelt Presidential $1 Coin
- 2013-S William Howard Taft Presidential $1 Coin

The Presidential dollars within the set represent seventh year issues. The Presidential $1 Coin Program debuted in 2007 and features four strikes each year that honor a former President of the United States.
The five quarters mark fourth year releases under the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The program debuted in 2010 and annually commemorates five different sites of national interest. Designs found on quarter reverses are emblematic of the site honored.
Finally, the 2013 Native America $1 Coin reflects the theme of "The Delaware Treaty (1778)." It appears as the fifth annual release in a series of reverse designs celebrating the important contributions made by Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.
Coins of the proof set are presented in three different protective lenses with one holding the quarters, one containing the Presidential dollars and the other with remaining strikes.
New Proof Set Packaging for 2013
New packaging debuts for this year’s proof set. It features photographic images and information related to the coins found within.
As described by the U.S. Mint:
"The front of the carton displays an image of the Washington Monument at sunrise. The back of the carton displays an image of each national park or site honored in 2013, its name, the state, and the year in which the park was established as a national site; a portrait of each President, the President’s name, and the years served in office; and the partial coin images of the obverses of the remaining coins."
This new packaging is similar to other numismatic products released earlier this year, like the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set and the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set.
Sales Expectations
Expect strong debut sales for this year’s proof set with around a quarter million sold in the first few days. That has been the trend in the last few years.
Until last year’s set, final sales of the annual sets had always topped one million. The U.S. Mint produced fewer 2012 proof sets and that resulted in its unexpected sellout. The following table lists U.S. Mint published sales figures for sets since 2008.
Sales of 2008 – 2012 Proof Sets
Issue Price | Coins | Final Sales | |
---|---|---|---|
2012 Set | $31.95 | 14 | 794,002 |
2011 Set | $31.95 | 14 | 1,098,835 |
2010 Set | $31.95 | 14 | 1,103,950 |
2009 Set | $29.95 | 18 | 1,477,967 |
2008 Set | $26.95 | 14 | 1,405,674 |

My 2013 proof set arrived yesterday. It had two Fort McHenry coins and no Great Basin coin. Interesting packaging error??
