Highlights from this week’s U.S. Mint sales report include first showings of the 2015 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set and products with 2015 John F. Kennedy Presidential $1 Coins.
Dollars featuring JFK, the 35th President of the United States, moved questionably slow out of the sales gate. On June 18, six products with Kennedy $1 coins went on sale. Available options include rolls, bags and boxes of circulating-quality $1 coins struck in Philadelphia and Denver with mint marks of ‘P’ and ‘D’. Here’s a breakdown of their starts by product type:
Opening Sales of John F. Kennedy Presidential $1 Coins
Products | Price | Unit Sales | 1s |
---|---|---|---|
25-Coin Roll (P) | $32.95 | 21,734 | 543,350 |
25-Coin Roll (D) | $32.95 | 5,286 | 132,150 |
100-Coin Bags (P) | $111.95 | 675 | 67,500 |
100-Coin Bags (D) | $111.95 | 524 | 52,400 |
250-Coin Box (P) | $275.95 | 1,717 | 429,250 |
250-Coin Box (D) | $275.95 | 1,254 | 313,500 |
Total | 1,538,150 |
The just over 1.53 million sales total is the slowest start since the introduction in 2012 of numismatic dollar options that included not just rolls but also bags and boxes. The weakness doesn’t make much sense given the popularity of Kennedy, and it could suggest an error in the Mint’s count. Next week’s sales report should offer some clarity.
As a comparison, the immediate prior dollar honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower opened with sales of over 2.86 million, the quickest pace since the Mint stopped offering 500-coin boxes of dollars in 2013. Also, the first 2015-dated Presidential dollar which depicted Harry S. Truman opened with sales of 1.99 million.
Debut Sales of 2015 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set
2015 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Sets enjoyed opening sales of 11,592, down from last year’s start of 12,876. For more, read this earlier article that includes a few photos of the set.

I think it’s just because it’s an ugly coin
I agree with Eric. The reason for slow sales is because this is a weak representation of Kennedy. I’d rather just stick with the half dollars.
Again interesting how the First Spouse Uncirculated Gold coins for Edith Roosevelt (48+) and Ida McKinley (7+) are reporting more sales when they have not been listed for sale on the US Mint’s web page for weeks. Then also the other 2013 coins that are listed for sale, show no sales for the week. Makes you wonder how many weeks does it take to get really accurate sales numbers.
