All but one of the four different sized 2015 American Eagle gold bullion coins has now sold out. Demand for the coins has surged in recent weeks as gold prices hover around an almost 6-year low.
The United States Mint announced late Tuesday afternoon that it sold all remaining 1 ounce or $50 American Gold Eagles, and that no more would be produced. The bureau also said that it would begin taking orders for 2016-dated American Gold Eagles on Jan. 11.
Sales of this year’s $50 gold coin jumped 80,500 ounces on the month for a 209.6% increase over the 26,000 ounces sold last month and a 64.3% increase over the 49,000 ounces delivered in November 2014. For the year, sales reached 626,500 ounces, marking a 50.8% climb above the 415,500 ounces from 2014.
Sales ended earlier this month for the 1/10 ounce and 1/4 ounce sizes. The least popular 1/2 ounce Gold Eagle remains available as of this writing.
