The 2013 5 Star Generals Half Dollar Coin is offered by the United States Mint as part of the larger 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program. A design found on the obverse of the 5 Star Generals Half Dollar Coin contains the portraits of Generals Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar N. Bradley.
These 5 Star Generals Half Dollar Coins are scheduled to be released by the US Mint on March 21, 2013. Maximum mintage for the strike is 750,000 across all product options with the coin to appear in both proof and uncirculated conditions.
Congress authorized these half-dollar coins along with silver dollars and $5 gold coins as part of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act. The Act became Public Law 111-262 when it was signed by President Obama on October 8, 2010.
The Act was created:
"To require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in recognition of five United States Army 5-Star Generals, George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry ‘Hap’ Arnold, and Omar Bradley, alumni of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to coincide with the celebration of the 132nd Anniversary of the founding of the United States Army Command and General Staff College," according to the terms of the authorizing legislation (Public Law 111-262).
The United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) was founded in 1881 as a training school for infantry and cavalry officers. Its role has expanded through the years as the Army’s technological ability has expanded.
Surcharge of $5 per half dollar sold under the program will be collected by the US Mint. These surcharges are to be paid to the Command and General Staff College Foundation to help finance its support of the Command and General Staff College.
As previously indicated, the obverse of each 2013 5 Star Generals Half Dollar Coin contains the likenesses of Generals Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar N. Bradley. The obverse design is the work of US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. Obverse inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, HENRY “HAP” ARNOLD, OMAR N. BRADLEY and 2013
Shown on the reverse of each coin is the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and HALF DOLLAR. Phebe Hemphill is the artist of record for the reverse as well.
