Offered by the United States Mint as part of its larger 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program is the 2013 5-Star Generals Silver Dollar. Shown on the obverse of the silver dollar are portraits of Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The United States Mint has indicated a release date of March 21, 2013 for the coin. It will be available in both proof and uncirculated conditions with a maximum mintage of 500,000 across all product options.
This silver dollar was authorized along with a $5 gold coin and a half dollar coin to recognize five United States Army 5-Star Generals and in celebration of the 132nd Anniversary of the founding of the United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC). All five generals are alumni of the college located in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
“The Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to promoting excellence in the faculty and students of the United States Army Command and General Staff College,” stated a portion of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin legislation. “Seeking new ways to educate and remind our citizens regarding the capable and selfless service of our military officers, and to imbue in them a sense of pride in those who bear the burden of military leadership in our Nation’s wars and in times of peace.”
Shown on the obverse of the 5-Star Generals $5 Gold Coin is a portrait of General Douglas MacArthur. The clad 5-Star Generals Half Dollar Coin contains the likenesses of Generals Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar N. Bradley.
The authorizing legislation for the coins (5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act – Public Law 111-262) dictates that surcharges be collected on the sale of each. This surcharge is $10 per silver dollar and is to be forwarded by the US Mint to the Secretary to the Command and General Staff College Foundation to help finance its support of the Command and General Staff College.
