2011-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagle Coin

Opening sales of the 2011-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagle coin was the center of attention in most US Mint weekly news articles. Sales of the collector uncirculated Gold Eagle started slow despite its previous two-year absence from the United States Mint lineup.

The collector 22-karat uncirculated gold coin went on sale Thursday, May 5. A total of 1,098 were sold as of Monday, May 9. That is 1/10th of the amount of one-ounce proof Gold Eagles sold in a lesser four-day period following their release in late April.

The uncirculated Gold Eagle may have lost fans following its two-years of unavailability. Beginning in 2009, the US Mint canceled their production as diverted its gold coin blanks toward the bullion versions of the coins since demand for them rose sharply. Not helping sales was its debuting $1,778 price — the highest ever charged by the US Mint for a Gold Eagle.

The collector coin was introduced in 2006. Then, and through to 2008, available sizes also included a 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce as well as a four-coin set. The smaller sizes have since been cancelled. Sales have a long way to go if they are to come close to previous years.

Eagle starts slow

David C. Harper | Numismatic News

After a two-year absence in 2009 and 2010, the uncirculated 1 ounce American Eagle gold piece with the "W" mintmark has returned. Did collectors miss it? Not if early sales results for the 2011 coin are any indication. Sure, the numbers don’t even reflect a full week of sales, but in comparison, when the …
