This week, on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, the United States Mint released the $1 Coin Cover for William McKinley.
The issue marks the 25th in the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series, and the first of four for this year. Forthcoming coin covers will include dollars featuring Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson.
This year the production level for each coin cover is 20,000, down from last year’s 22,000 per release. Each issued since 2007 has contained a circulating-quality Presidential dollar from the Denver Mint and one from the Philadelphia Mint. The dollars are unique in that they are first day production issues. In the case of the William McKinley Dollar Coin Cover, this is December 11, 2012 for the Philadelphia $1 and October 3, 2012 for the Denver $1.
Coin cover’s include the two coins, a portrait of the President honored, a U.S. stamp and a postmark date noting when the dollars entered circulation (before 2012) or when the coin cover was released (2012 to current). The back of the covers have information about the series, the coins and the President.
The 25th Presidential Dollar Coin Cover is available from the United States Mint online store at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The price is $19.95, the same as covers since 2011.
The American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series was introduced in 2007 alongside the Presidential $1 Coin Program. The U.S. Mint continues to offer coin covers dating back to 2009. The following grid offers the latest sales and announced product limits for the series since its inception.
