The United States Mint released one of the most eagerly awaited products Thursday, the America the Beautiful (ATB) 5-ounce Hot Springs Silver uncirculated coin.
Collectors gathered to place orders in numbers that brought the Mint’s website down during the busiest first two hours following the Hot Springs release. Many visitors were treated to the message:
"The United States Mint is experiencing technical difficulties. During this time period, you will not be able to use the website. To place an order please call 1-800-USA-Mint (872-6468). We apologize for the inconvenience."
The first two hours turned out to be a messy experiences for many buyers, as warned previously by the United States Mint, but the ordering environment normalized soon after. Collectors were not only able to place orders, but their fears of a first day sell-out and the chance that their order would not go through were allayed. Anyone who wanted to pay $279.95 for an ATB Hot Springs Coin could, as there were still several thousand left by the end of the first day of sales. However, a sell out does appear to be in the making. More than 19,000 of the available 27,000 were spoken for by 9:00 PM Eastern Time on Thursday, leaving less than 30% remaining.
Buyers can order the ATB 5 Oz Hot Springs Coins online (http://catalog.usmint.gov/) or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
