New products dominated the US Mint weekly sales news articles. The debuting sales performances are known for the 2011 Proof Gold Eagles and the first two 2011-dated America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. Sales figures for these US Mint products are not weekly, in the sense that they have not been available for that long.
The 2011 Proof Gold Eagles were released on Thursday, April 21, and their debut sales cover through to the following Sunday. In summary, the five Proof Gold Eagle products showed weaker starting sales than last year’s issue (2010), but better than the prior year when they were available (2008).
Their launch right before the extended holiday break was certainly one factor that affected sales. Higher prices to compensate for the higher cost of the 22-karat gold within each coin was another.
Debut Sales of 2011 Proof Gold Eagles | |
1 ounce Proof Gold | 7,249 |
1/2 ounce Proof Gold | 1,159 |

The first two 2011 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, the Five Ounce Gettysburg and Five Ounce Glacier issues, were made available on Monday, April 25, to United States Mint Authorized Purchasers who buy in large quantities and resell in smaller quantities.
The US Mint did not provide a daily breakdown of sales as they typically do with bullion products. Their debut performance was instead published through the Mint’s weekly sales report featuring mostly numismatic products. Mint AP’s picked up 153,400 of the silver bullion coins on the first day. Numismatic News reported, article linked below, that the AP’s had ordered 183,400 by Wednesday. The nine AP’s had until Friday to place their order before any unsold inventory was reallocated to others who wanted them. Both five ounce bullion coins have a total available mintage of 253,000, with the possibility that more could be produced later.
