There was news earlier in the year about the possibility of special coin sets from the United States Mint with 2013 Theodore Roosevelt Presidential dollars.
That news has turned into reality at least for one set. The US Mint’s product schedule now lists and shows a release date of September 3, 2013 for a 2013 Presidential Discovery Set – Theodore Roosevelt.
According to the product page, it is designed for young collectors or beginners, and it will cost $9.95 and is limited to 20,000. The coin set includes one uncirculated Theodore Roosevelt Presidential $1 Coin from the Philadelphia Mint, an informational folder and an 11-page activity book filled with puzzles and games intended for children ages 8-12.
Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States. As part of the Mint’s Presidential $1 Coin Program, circulating versions of the coin were released in rolls, bags and boxes on April 11, 2013.
There had also been a discussion of another special Theodore Roosevelt Presidential coin set for seasoned collectors that could include a proof or uncirculated Theodore Roosevelt Presidential dollar along with a medal of the president that was composed in bronze or possibly silver. As of this writing, there has been no official word from the US Mint about this product.
Roosevelt is a popular American president, his is one of the four faces sculpted on Mount Rushmore, and he is well regarded by coin collectors. Theodore Roosevelt called for a renaissance in American coinage. He personally commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign coins at the beginning of the 20th century. The result was the famed $20 Gold Double Eagle, considered one of the most beautiful coins ever produced in the United States.
