The National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Monday it will issue silver collector coins honoring the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Romanian Broadcasting Company (SRR). The public radio broadcaster made its first transmission on November 1, 1928 at 5:00 PM, and is celebrating with a series of anniversary events until November 10.
The .999 silver proof coin has a face value of 10 lei, weighs 31.103 grams, has a diameter of 37 millimeters and a milled edge. Although no coin image of discerning size is currently available, BNR describes the coin’s design:
Obverse: in the upper part, the inscription “ROMANIA” and the depiction of the current head office of Radio România; below, from left to right, years “1928 2008”, the coat of arms of Romania and the face value – 10 LEI on two rows; in the lower part, from left to right, the representation of the Radiotelephonic Broadcasting Company headquarters as it looked in 1928 and the image of a female broadcaster of the ’30s speaking on the microphone.
Reverse: in the upper part, the three-row inscription “80 ANI DE LA INFIINTARE”; below, from left to right, a radio set of the ’30s and the new logo of Radio România; in the lower part, a pair of headphones.
Each coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by a descriptive brochure in Romanian, English and French. The coins are available through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, and Timisoara.
