Several new lines are added to this week’s United States Mint coin sales tables.
The U.S. Mint introduced three new product groups last week, but it also stopped selling four coins — the proof and uncirculated Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins.
Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coins were released on Thursday, June 3. Their opening sales were not exactly robust compared to other debuting first lady offerings, but then they also launched at the highest price points for the series with the proof at $779 and the uncirculated listed at $766. Their respective Thursday to Sunday sales were 1,579 and 855. By comparison, the prior 2010 Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins opened with sales of 1,824 and 1,057.
Since the Pierce coins are new and will be available for around a year, collectors may be speculating that gold prices will eventually decline and the cost of the First Spouse Gold Coins will follow.
Tylers’ sales figures did not move from the prior report, which means they likely will not until the finalized (audited) numbers are provided in 2011. Julia Tyler gold pieces followed by Letitia Tyler’s are the scarcest mintages for no longer Mint offered first lady coins. In a contrasting picture of how gains in gold have raised gold coin prices, there is a $150 spread between the Pierce coins and the initial $629 and $616 prices of the Tylers’.
Perhaps the most anticipated numbers collectors were looking out for were debuting figures for the American the Buffalo Gold Proof coins. They also launched on Thursday, June 3. While the Mint normally has the opening sales figures available by now, they were not provided in this week’s report. An update from the Mint as of this writing was not available. The bullion version of the coin advanced 7,000 since last week to reach 15,000 for the month of June and 142,000 for the year.
The Mint released Yellowstone Quarter bags and rolls on Tuesday, June 1. By Sunday, June 6, buyers ordered 4,447 of the Philadelphia 100-coin bags and 4,399 of the Denver 100-coin bags. Two-roll sets were the most popular with their sales at 23,273. The numbers are weaker than the Hot Springs Quarters debut, but then those numbers included an extra sales day since they were launched on a Monday. (For more information, read 2010 Yellowstone Quarter Sales Debut.)
2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars are still available in proof, but they are close to selling out. Only 1,023 were left as of Sunday, which means only a few hundred are likely available now. (For more details on the dollars and the latest in other silver product sales, read Few Boy Scouts Dollars Left, Silver Eagles Active.)
