United States Mint fractional bullion American Gold Eagles sprinted out of the gate, while old and new Lincoln cents and annual collector sets jumped over their prior weekly sales with sharp gains.
In the case of 2010 fractional Gold Eagles, pent-up demand was minimized by their much earlier launch as compared to the fiery 2009s, but opening 5-day sales already have them well on their way to topping all sizes sold in 2008. The 240,000 that buyers purchased of the least expensive 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle is just 30,001 short from surpassing sales in both 2008 and 2009.
The U.S. Mint imposed 2009 Lincoln cents deadline to include all products that contained last year’s four redesigned pennies proved to be a boon for sales. Two-roll sets of the coins rallied with the "Professional Life" design selling 964 more than their prior week to finish at 294,083. The "Presidency" design surged 2,569 more than prior numbers to end at 264,700. The penny attention attracted 2010 Lincoln cent buyers as well, with two-roll sets popping up another 4,237 versus last week’s 2,960.
In fact, all of the other now discontinued sets — the 2009 US Mint Proof Set, the 2009 Silver Proof Set and the 2009 Mint Set — registered better week-over-week sales (see tables below).
Demand for 2010-dated sets surged as well, with the exception of the newly released 2010 America The Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™. While it would be unrealistic to expect that they could beat out their second week of sales, they notably climbed over the 100,000 milestone with a weekly 13,802 advance. The clad 2010 quarters set surged 10,359 versus 9,755 and hit 131,641.
2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollar coins lost traction. Revised Mint figures continue to have them at 99.7 percent of the maximum 350,000 mintage, but their total fell from the last reported 348,977 to 348,800, registering a weekly loss of 177. A total of 1,200 proofs were left as of Sunday. Those advanced 1,668 to 243,800. The sold out uncirculated uncirculated coins declined 1,797 to 105,000. Given their great fall and now even number, the U.S. Mint may have finalized their returns, cancellations, and standby orders at least from an accounting perspective.
Finally, 2010 American Buffalo Gold proof coins opened to weekly sales of 15,071 — that, coming from their release on June 3 through to June 10. By Sunday, June 13, the 24-karat coins added another 2,394 to stand at 17,465. These are less robust than launching 2009 sales, but they are quickly closing on the one ounce 2008 Buffalo gold proofs which ended at 18,863.
