The United States Mint is not seeing a lot of action in numismatic coins as collectors take their traditional summer break from buying. U.S. Mint sales figures show that only four collector products experienced higher demand than the prior week –which was slow in itself, and those were related to older Presidential $1 offerings.
Weekly sales eased for bullion coins as well, but their unit increases continue to be high despite the time of year. American Silver Eagles advanced a touch over 600K during the last seven days to reach 19.645 million for the year, passing the nearly 19.6 million sold in all of 2008. Mint authorized buyers need to order 9.2 million more in the next 5 1/2 months to topple record-breaking 2009.
Fractional 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagles made their first showing for the month, advancing 10,000 on July 8 and then another 10,000 on July 13. They’ve scored 20,000 for the month, bringing their total to 300,000 since released on June 10, 2010. Their sales have already passed the 260,000 sold in 2008 and in 2009. The other fractional sizes — the 1/2 ounce and 1/4 ounce — have not budged since June 24.
One ounce Gold Eagles are up 52,000 in July, moving quicker than last month and tracking to handily beat the 86,000 sold in July 2009.
While $1200+ an ounce gold prices are raising bullion coin demand, they appear to be hindering collector gold coins which have much higher premiums.
Weekly First Spouse Gold Coin sales more than halved with their gain of 181 versus 444. The uncirculated Abigail Fillmore gold piece was adjusted down 18, giving it a two-week increase of a single coin. Proof American Buffalo gold coins are crawling as well, rising 433 versus 789 for a year to date total of 22,290.
The London gold fix fell under the $1200 mark for several days last week, which may have helped to stall proof and uncirculated gold coins with collectors waiting for their potential price reductions.
The following sales tables provide a breakout of the most recent U.S. Mint coin sales figures.
