United States Mint coin sales were mixed, breaking a string of two weeks where demand had climbed across nearly every product the U.S. Mint was selling.
James Buchanan Presidential $1 Coin Covers appear in the sales tables for the first time this week, having just been released Thursday, September 30, 2010. Four-day orders totaled 16,220, which continues a trend of lower opening sales as compared to previous debuting figures for the series:
- Franklin Pierce Presidential $1 covers started at 16,688 between their issue on Thursday, July 1, to Sunday, July 4

Millard Fillmore $1 covers opened at 17,833 between their launch on Friday, April 2 through to Sunday, April 4

Zachary Taylor $1 covers debuted at 18,705 from their release on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, to Sunday, January 10, 2010*

James K. Polk $1 covers opened at 20,863 between their issue on Thursday, October 1, 2009, through to Sunday, October 11, 2009*

John Tyler $1 covers debuted at 20,422 from their release on Thursday, July 2, 2009, through to Sunday, July 12, 2009*

Buchanan’s Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set now has a full week of sales under its belt after being issued September 24. 941 more were added, bringing them to 3,021. Sales during the same opening time frame for the prior Pierce medal sets were lower, at 2,420.
James Buchanan’s Liberty Gold wraps up this week’s focus on the former President. The 24-karat gold coins advanced to 9,498, with 249 more for the proof and 194 for the uncirculated. The gold pieces are now at 63.3 percent of their maximum 15,000 mintage, and are quickly approaching 2008 spouse gold coin sales levels.
Finally, in U.S. Mint bullion coins, demand has eased in the last several days despite the continuation of record gold and 30-year high silver prices. The weekly increase for the one-ounce American Gold Eagle came in at 15,500 versus the prior 24,500, and the pick up for the bullion American Silver Eagle was 515,000 compared to 835,000.
