Record gold and 30-year high silver prices has without question raised the demand for bullion products. So much so that there is not much excitement in the latest round of U.S. Mint sales figures after collector proof 2010 Gold Eagles and investor bullion coins are pulled out.
2010 American Silver Eagle bullion coins are back to their rip-roaring pace. Weekly sales jumped 835,000 versus the prior 515,000, and their year-to-date total will likely top 27 million by Friday.
One-ounce 2010 American Gold Eagle bullion coins surged 38,000 compared to 15,500. The fractional half-ounce and tenth ounce sizes each jumped over their previous increases by 2,000 and 15,000, respectively. Total ounces for the bullion series has reached 67,000 for October, which is on pace to top September’s rally of 120,500. The slower August tally of 57,000 is already surpassed.
The collector versions of the newly released proof Gold Eagles surged past their prior debuting numbers as well, although those were last seen back in 2008. More than $47.3 million worth of coins were purchased during their first four days of availability. For sales and analysis, read the CoinNews.net article: 2010 Proof Gold Eagle Opening Sales Soar Over Past Issues.
Another collector product stands out for the attention it is receiving. Ironically, it is not a new issue but one from last year. The 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set was the only U.S. Mint numismatic silver product to outperform its prior weekly gain. Interestingly, the intrinsic value of the proof silver quarters is quickly approaching the set’s $29.95 price tag. The six quarters include nearly 1.1 ounces of silver. With spot silver currently at $24.41 an ounce, the set has a melt value alone of $26.49. Check out the Silver Coin Price Guide for other Mint prices, melt values and sales.
