US Mint sales figures were mostly lower for both numismatic and bullion coins, which is normal during the Christmas and New Year holidays as investors and collectors take time off to spend time with their families.
The most interesting aspect of the numbers is the zero reported increase of 2010 Proof Silver Eagles. Their sales figures of 834,879 have remained unchanged since Sunday, December 19. The US Mint on Tuesday, December 28, actually moved the proof Silver Eagles to its "no longer available" or "sold out" website section. A request for updated figures and information from the US Mint will hopefully be answered and available by early next week. The Mint has already indicated that it will begin selling 2011 Proof Silver Eagles by July 6, 2011.
Ironically, the numbers for bullion Silver Eagles were also unchanged from the year-to-date sales of 34,662,500 which were reported last week. Bullion 2011 Silver Eagles are expected to be available for order on January 3, 2011.
2010 Proof Gold Eagles did show advances. The single half ounce sold out last week. Updated figures have them rising another 35 to 10,166. The level is lower than expected, however, considering the US Mint initially indicated that it would make 15,000 of them available for sale as singles. The coin, of course, is also included and is still available within the Mint’s 4-coin set. Buyers grabbed another 1,181 of those, bringing their total to 33,027. The quarter and tenth ounce sizes had more modest weekly increases of 185 and 854, respectively. The single one-ounce Gold Eagle sold out in October and is also only available now within the 4-coin set.
Speaking of sell outs, US Mint Authorized Purchasers have ordered all 165,000 of the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™. They are now beginning to make their way into the secondary market. For more information on the sales numbers and what companies purchased them, read US Mint Sells Entire Mintage of 2010 ATB Silver Bullion Coins.
The biggest numismatic gainers last week were the clad 2010 Proof Set, up 10,481, followed by the 2010 Silver Proof Set, up 7,768. While these sets are expected to remain available until the latter part of next year, the newer 2011 sets will go on sale in January.
The following tables show the latest coin sales figures as reported by the US Mint:
