Surging gold and silver prices appear to be helping several US Mint coin products, including bullion American Silver Eagles and collector First Spouse Gold Coins.
The latest US Mint sales figures show a near doubling of the weekly First Spouse Gold Coins totals, with 759 sold against 380 from the previous week. Four of the eight 24-karat gold coins enjoyed triple-digit gains.
Sales have not been as strong since the week ending December 12. That happened to be the first full week following the release of the Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coins when the numbers were naturally inflated. Aside from rising gold prices, two items involving the series occurred last week — their $25 price increase and the proof Buchanan Liberty sell out. The sell out certainly helped the companion uncirculated Buchanan Liberty. It rose the most at 161.
US Mint 2011 Proof Sets jumped out with debut sales of 253,144. Its next three weekly increases came in at 25,879, 21,784 and 20,473. Last week’s sales report showed they had jumped 73,789. The latest weekly tally shows an even better increase of 78,551, bringing their total to 473,620.
Bags and rolls of 2011 Kennedy Half Dollars now appear in the sales columns. Released on the 15th, collectors ordered 8,841 of the two-roll sets and 2,114 of the 200-coin bags.
As mentioned in the opening, American Silver Eagles have been selling faster in recent days. They advanced 908,500 during the last seven days, reaching 2,638,500 for the month and topping 9 million for the year. To place that in perspective, 9 million is higher than the annual levels achieved during fourteen of the twenty-six years the Silver Eagles have been available. As another kicker, this month has already made the history books as the best ever February for the coins. They topped the previous February record of 2,125,000 which was set in 2009. February 2010 now ranks third at 2,050,000.
