Coin collectors appear to have taken a spring break vacation as buying activity for American numismatic coins and sets retreated, according to the latest US Mint sales figures.
Several US Mint products actually declined from their previous tallies, indicating a batch of customer returns, cancellations or accounting updates.
Bags and rolls of Mount Hood National Park Quarters fell the most after an unexpected uptick reported last week indicated soaring levels that were more typical of a fresh release. This week’s sales figures have them down by than 22,000 across all three product offerings. Gettysburg quarters, Kennedy halves, Fillmore and Native American dollars, two First Spouse Gold coins and last year’s quarters silver proof set were among other products to have their totals cut.
2011 commemorative sales slowed significantly. US Army Commemorative Coins rose 6,128 across the gold, silver and clad options. They climbed 16,227 during the previous week. Comparing the same time frames, Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins advanced 12,746 against 37,317. The silver dollar proofs for each commemorative continue to rack up the higher numbers.
All proof and mint sets registered significantly lower weekly sales. The 2011 Proof Set remained the most popular, advancing 24,133 to 589,498. The 2010 Silver Proof Set actually outperformed this year’s release, indicating buyers are watching silver coin prices and values. The 2010’s rose 5,479 to 555,381 while the 2011 Silver Proof Set gained 3,440 to 299,260.
In US Mint investment-grade bullion coins, sales improved for the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle.
One-ounce Gold Eagle bullion coins more than doubled their prior weekly gain, rising 18,500 to 235,000. The smallest one-tenth ounce Gold Eagle surged 20,000 versus the previous 5,000.
In another milestone, Silver Eagle bullion coins topped the 11 million marker in year-to-date sales. This year already ranks as the fourth best since the series was introduced in 1986. The nearly three-quarter of a million increase was 80,500 better than last week’s reported gain.
The following tables show the latest coin sales figures as reported by the US Mint:
