The latest round of US Mint sales figures reveals some interesting weekly results. First Spouse Gold Coins jumped, resulting in two new sell outs this week. 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Sets debuted, but at a slower pace. And in a milestone, the 2011 Silver Proof Sets rallied above 300,000.
2011 Silver Proof Sets surged 25,940. That was their best weekly showing since their six-day sales debut of 209,367 in January. The increase also places the silver sets at 325,200. Last year’s sets, which had their prices raised on Friday from $56.95 to $64.95, rose 2,026 to 557,407. Each of the Silver Proof Sets now has an intrinsic melt value of nearly $50 at the current silver spot price of $37.21 an ounce.
2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Sets were released March 17 for $14.95. As of Sunday, March 20, collectors purchased 53,944. This is 28.6 percent lower than last year’s sets which debuted at 75,558 during the same amount of days. The early January availability of the 2011 Proof Set may have hurt sales since it also includes the quarters. Last year’s America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set was launched nearly three months before the 2010 Proof Set, making the quarters sets more attractive for buyers not wanting to wait.
First Spouse Gold Coins rallied 968 as a group versus their previous weekly increase of 336. The following three uncirculated issues enjoyed the biggest gains:
- Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin, up 493
- Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin, up 186
- Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coin, up 117
Buyers are now facing limited options with only four First Spouse Gold Coins available. Two more sold out this week. No longer available are the uncirculated Abigail Fillmore and uncirculated Jane Pierce. They were pulled from US Mint stores before reaching their published mintages.
The available 24-karat coins in the series now include:
- Proof and uncirculated Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coins
- Uncirculated Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins
- Proof Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coins
