Newly released United States Mint sales figures reflect softer demand for numismatic products which include the debuting American Gold Eagles and Chaco Culture Quarter Three-Coin Set.
Placed on sale last Tuesday, April 17, the Chaco Culture Quarter Set started with sales of 10,666. That was down 725 from the previous set’s open, but it was stronger than several other debuts. This year’s sets are $5 less than prior years and offer a much-improved appearance with colorful scenery depicted on the display cards. Introduced in 2010 in support of the America the Beautiful Quarters® program, the U.S. Mint continues to sell every one it has released. So far, the 2010 Yellowstone Quarter Three-Coin Set is the best-selling at 20,807, rising 37 over last week’s reported sales.
Briefly, as this CoinNews.net article offers more detail, the U.S. Mint took in sales of a bit more than $8.2 million for the newly released proof American Gold Eagles. The level is down significantly with debut sales of last year’s Eagles at more than $27.7 million and those from 2010 at over $43.3 million. The Eagles should see a touch of new support as the U.S. Mint reduced their prices earlier today.
2012 Proof American Silver Eagles lost some charm these past few days. Last week’s reported debut sales were 299,539. They advanced 29,117 since for a new total of 328,656. Demand always retreats after the first several days of a new product launch, but last year’s Eagles had already attained sales of 407,991 during the same stretch of time. As expected, the coins did stay atop the U.S. Mint’s best-selling list.

People seem to be loving the SSB two coin set. Maybe the mint has found a way to increase sales – sell in sets rather than singles (or is it because it’s the SSB and not a set?)
You’re right; sets are a great way to increase sales of individual products when offered together at a slight discount. Worked like a charm in the baseball card business..!! Pretty packaging and shiny products all with a 5 or 10% discount is a sure way to lure customers
I am glad I bought these in multiples, and the new picture embellishment is a plus. The three coin set features some truly sparkling quality examples. These are seemingly the first strikes, so clean is the detail, with some DP found in mine. If you just want one purchase as a way to complete a set, this IS THE purchase option. Eventually, all these will sell out. Some of the recent issues, where total mints have been reduced are indeed near sell-out. Buy the three coin set.
