Stack’s Bowers Galleries conducted the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo on June 27-29, an impressive sale that realized $10,929,460.
The auction featured coins from several major collections, including the Land of Smiles Collection of Liberty Nickels, Selections from the Anne Kate Collection, the Winecrest Collection Part II, the Walking Liberty Tribute Collection, and much more.
The Land of Smiles Collection of Liberty Nickels saw enthusiastic bidding as collectors and dealers alike vied for the beautiful, top-of-the-pop coins in this collection. Highlights included a beautifully toned 1888 example graded MS-66 by PCGS and awarded a green CAC sticker.
Among the top finest certified examples of the date, this lovely Superb Gem climbed to a remarkable $23,000. Lot 2357 offered an unbelievable 1905 example in the amazing grade of Proof-68 (PCGS) CAC, the only example of this date certified at that level by PCGS. That coin sold for a hefty $29,375.
U.S. gold coins featured some truly spectacular coins, like the MCMVII (1907) Ultra High Relief double eagle offered as lot 4438. The finest certified by PCGS in the absolutely stunning grade of Proof-69, this Superb Gem rarity sold for $2,760,000, placing it at number 7 among the top 10 auction prices realized for a U.S. coin.
Also offered among U.S. gold coins was a breathtaking 1879 Flowing Hair four-dollar gold Stella. The solo finest graded at either service in Proof-68 Ultra Cameo (NGC), this coin sold for a strong $411,250.
