Distracting summer activities combined with a lack of U.S. Mint product releases resulted in waning coin sales last week. No surprise there. On the horizon though, are possible milestones for several numismatic American Eagles.
Without the help of outside factors, like a reversal in precious metals prices, slowing U.S. coin sales will be the norm until new products launch in August.
Demand last week dipped even for popular U.S. Mint numismatic products. In all, 28 of them showed better week-over-week sales compared to a nearly just as mild reading of 34 from the previous report. The year’s best weekly pick-up hit 84 in late June.
Volume was sharply lower as well with just 7 products topping unit sales increases above 1,000 versus the prior week’s 17.
U.S. Mint Best Numismatic Product Sellers of the Week
Collector’s focused their attention on the following products:
- 2012 Proof Set (+13,415 to 458,038)
- 2012 Mint Uncirculated Coin Set (+6,180 to 258,470)
- 2012 Silver Proof Set (+5,696 to 261,270)
- 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set (+1,678 to 189,521)
- 2012-S Chaco Culture Quarters 40-coin Roll (+1,630 to 5,219)
- 2012 Birth Set (+1,096 to 23,695)
- 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (+1,013 105,401)
- Grover Cleveland Presidential (P) $1 Coin Rolls (+942 to 43,551)
- 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set (+831 to 43,432)
- 2012-S El Yunque Quarters 40-coin Roll (+818 to 11,483)
Noticeably missing from the Mint’s top-ten list was the 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle. Its sales actually slipped 44, likely from returns and cancellations. The Eagles had been suspended since mid-July for re-pricing, returning for sale only this morning at a cheaper $54.95 price.
Milestones Near for Numismatic American Eagles
There are three milestones nearing for numismatic American Eagles.
- 2012-W Proof Silver American Eagles are 7,255 away from 500,000
- 2011-W Uncirculated Silver American Eagles are 2,701 from 300,000
- 2011-W Proof Platinum American Eagles are 324 from 15,000
There is a good chance that the proof Silver American Eagles will hit the 500K milestone by next week’s sales report. The chances for the 2011-dated American Eagles are questionable, but their sales could be excited since the 2012-dated versions launch in early August.

Two CoinNews.net articles right next to each other. One has bullion Silver Eagle sales at 18,860,000 the other at 19,060,000. Which is it?
Steve, CoinNews.net reports the latest bullion Eagle sales every day in its gold articles. This weekly sales article says the effective date for the bullion coin sales was Tuesday. The Silver Eagles went up 200,000 to 19,060,000 by Wednesday afternoon. Today, they went up another 100,000 to 19,160,000 according to http://www.coinnews.net/2012/07/26/gold-hits-three-week-high-us-1-oz-coins-rise/.
Exactly so, thanks Tim. The U.S. Mint does not release its daily bullion coin sales figures until late in the afternoon. Our weekly coin sales report is usually published in the morning, so it contains the previous day’s bullion totals.
