Stack’s Bowers Galleries recently conducted the Official Auction of the Philadelphia ANA World’s Fair of Money and ANA/PNG Pre-Show from August 4-10, and delivered truly outstanding results.
The sale contained exceptional coins from collections like the Battle Born Collection, the Hoosier Flyer Collection, the Dorchester Heights Collection, the Philip Winston Pillsbury Collection of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, the Just Having Fun Collection of Standing Liberty Quarters, the Werner Family Collection of 1796 Coinage, the Winecrest Collection, and more.
The sale of the Battle Born Collection, one of just two complete sets of Carson City coinage ever assembled, and the only one to ever be sold intact, made history when the unique 1873-CC No Arrows dime offered as lot 11104 sold for a record-setting $1.84 million.
Other important realizations from the Battle Born Collection included the superb gem 1876-CC half eagle graded MS-66 (PCGS) CAC, one of just two Mint State examples known to exist. This impressive coin, whose provenance traces back to the Eliasberg, Clapp, and Chapman holdings, climbed to a remarkable $477,250.
The collection featured an example of each of the 111 regular-issue Carson City coins and sold for a total of nearly $10 million.
Other significant highlights of the landmark Stack’s Bowers ANA auction included an amazing 1796 With Pole Liberty Cap half cent in MS-64 BN (PCGS) CAC. Part of the Werner Family Collection, this remarkable coin sold for a strong $402,500.
The Just Having Fun Collection of Standing Liberty Quarters, ranked No.1 on the Current and All-Time Finest PCGS Set Registry in the category Standing Liberty FH Quarters with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1916-1930), featured the finest known example of the famous overdate 1918/7-S. Graded MS-64+ FH by PCGS, this lustrous and well struck coin topped out at $253,000.
