Spotlighted in the latest U.S. Mint sales figures are two debuting products that competed with buyer’s extra attention on gold and silver coins due to rallying precious metals prices.
In gold coins, all 2012-W Proof American Gold Eagle products jumped. 1,459 Gold Eagles sold compared to 719 previously. Sales of 2011-2012-W Proof American Gold Buffalo coins advanced 371 against 189.
Gold coin sales were hurt some in the previous sales report as it reflected weaker demand after the U.S. Mint hiked prices in late August. The bureau again raised gold coin prices this past Wednesday as the weekly average for gold shot above $1,700 an ounce.
In silver coins, demand surged across nearly every numismatic product containing the white metal. That included each of the eight America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. Combined, their sales advanced 2,485 versus the previous 1,435.
2012-W Proof Silver Eagles were the star among all U.S. Mint collector products. Soaring nearly three times their prior gain and growing stronger for four straight weeks, the collectible silver coins rushed forward 62,623 to top the 600,000 milestone at 659,438. The proof Silver Eagle’s last three sets of weekly sales from oldest to newest were 9,542; 11,699; and 22,848.
On the flip side, companion 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagles bounced backwards 8,791 to settle lower at 136,164. It is a bit rare for such a sizable adjustment to occur. Negative sales losses tagged to products are typically associated with customer returns and cancellations.
Debut Sales of 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set
Interestingly, the 8,791 turnaround for the 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle was more than the debut sales total for the 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, which includes one of the Eagles — plus four uncirculated 2012-P Presidential $1 coins and the 2012-D Native American dollar. The six-coin set debuted at what seems like a very low 4,941.
In looking at the two other annual sets released in the past, however, the series is not noted for sprinting out of the gate. Despite relatively slow starts, each achieved eventual sales of 90,167 (in 2007) and 98,896 (in 2008).

Looks like their will be only 301,302 or a little more than that, for the 2012 S Proof Silver American Eagle. It will be the 2nd lowest Silver Proof American Eagle ever minted. We all know the 95 W Proof is 1st.
Don’t get me started on the 2012 “S”. In Labeling news: NGC is pleased to announce the upcoming release of a stunning, limited-edition NGC Retro Holder. Reminiscent of the original NGC holder used in 1987, the NGC Retro Holder features a sleek, black core that optimizes the contrast of silver and gold coins. Paid members of the NGC Collectors Society may submit coins for grading and encapsulation in this special holder from October 1 to December 31, 2012 — but only while supplies last. Quantities are limited for each coin type… Coins eligible for the NGC Retro Holder: •Silver Eagles… Read more »
I think I might send all my NGC labeled coins in for a reevaluation so I can get the special black holder! (Now, if I only had one…)
hehe
PCGS, NGC or those other grading services, are over rated. send them to me (bSCS) bills Shiny Coin Service. Give me $20 and I’ll entomb your coin in a 1/4 inch of high quality plastic. then i will give you a grade of shiny ‘S’ (lowest) to omg i can see myself in the coin shiny, ‘OMGICSMITCS’ (highest). then, you have a list of background templates you can choose from, or customize your own.
I think i’ll send in a 25th Ann set, & a San Fran Silver Eagle set, and get the limited – edition NGC retro black core holder, at no extra cost. It will really optimize the contrast of the Silver Eagles. Thanks RonnieBGood. jim can’t send in labeled coins for reevaluation to get the limited edition NGC black holder. Despite the fact that you do not have not one. NGC black core holder graded 70 $$$.
Labeling Gone Wild!!
Jokes aside…
On the positive side, Grader’s do provide a valuable service. Too many collectors in the past paid too much for a grade based on a judgment by the seller.
On the neg side, The proliferation of labels does risk damaging the hobby by confusing the collecting public. The illusion (of course) is by increasing the value of a coin based on the label it has in a holder. When this house of cards collapses (in the future) it will be seen as a bad chapter in collecting history.
The brown label is the way to go. I don’t think they will ever go out of style. The complete brown set of mint state & proof Silver Eagles is what most collectors, will have or trying to put to together now, or in the future. But the black retro holder won’t hurt the 25th Ann Silver Eagle set at all.
Why the reduction in 2012 unc silver eagles?
That’s a ship load of customer returns & cancellations Kevin. That’s crazy. – 8,791 2012 W UNC Silver Eagles.
