Sales levels were depressed for all but one of the collector silver coins suspended by the United States Mint for re-pricing. On the flip side, demand improved for the bureau’s numismatic gold coins.
Last Wednesday, October 3, the U.S. Mint stopped selling its numismatic silver coins because silver had traded in a range of $30.00 to $35.00 per ounce since August 23, 2012. The coins returned from suspension one week later, on Wednesday, October 10. Since they were missing from the Mint’s product lineup for so many days, significantly weakened numbers were expected to show up in the latest U.S. Mint sales report.
That was exactly the case excluding, surprisingly, the 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle. Demand was exceptional for these silver coins early last week as their sales jumped 20,359 in two days compared to the previous 7-day advance of 12,133. (Read this coin news article for weekly sales comparisons for all of the suspended coins.) The Silver Eagles managed to stay atop the Mint’s best-selling product list.
U.S. Mint Top Selling Numismatic Products of the Week
- 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle (+20,359 to 765,747)
- 2012 Proof Set (+9,062 to 559,801)
- 2012 Mint Set (+3,504 to 301,545)
- 2012 Silver Proof Set (+3,179 to 308,156)
- Making American History Coin & Currency Set (+1,049 to 42,594)
- 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set (+1,037 to 209,398)
- Benjamin Harrison Presidential (P) $1 Coin Rolls (+996 to 40,289)
- 2012-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagles (+846 to 145,076)
- 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (+793 to 113,645)
- Benjamin Harrison Presidential (D) $1 Coin Rolls (+757 to 36,339)
As a consequence of silver’s volatile nature, three times this year the U.S. Mint has temporarily suspended sales of certain silver coins. In the latest round, the affected coins — uncirculated and proof Silver Eagles and uncirculated America the Beautiful five ounce silver coins — went up in price by $5 for every ounce of silver they contained. Given their higher price tags and realizing that silver prices have since fallen from a peak of $35 an ounce to $34 an ounce, these coins will be challenged in bringing home better sales figures by next week.
Sales Improve for Numismatic Gold Coins
Recent price increases for numismatic gold coins had weighed heavily on their sales, but a corner may have been turned. Demand improved across each of the American Gold Eagle products. As a group, unit sales advanced 863 versus the previous 446. Individually, the proof one-half ounce American Gold Eagle surged the most, rising 315 compared to the prior weekly gain of 44.
Also, 2012 $5 Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Gold Coins went up 43 against 23.
US Mint Sales: Bullion Gold and Silver Coins
Mark it down as one of the slowest weeks of the year for U.S. Mint bullion coins. Since last Thursday through to Wednesday, the only U.S. Mint reported bullion gains were for 1,500 of the one-ounce American Eagle gold coins. Aside from that, all October bullion sales come from increases reported by the U.S. Mint on one day, which was last Thursday.
The following offers the latest October and year-to-date bullion sales across all U.S. Mint bullion products:
