Gold gave back more than half of its previous two days of gains Thursday as the U.S. dollar rebounded from a four-week low. Precious metals closed nearer session lows.
Gold prices for December delivery declined $8.30, or 0.5%, to settle at $1,744.70 an ounce on the Comex in New York. In another day of thin trading, gold marked an intraday low of $1,739.00 and high of $1,753.40.
"Without any other major drivers, the precious metals will continue to show weakness and test the downside" because the latest buyers might lack patience to wait for another bull run, said Carlos Perez-Santalla, a broker at brokerage PVM Futures, according to Reuters.
Silver for December delivery fell 36.4 cents, or 1.1%, to settle at $32.868 an ounce. Silver traded between $32.745 and $33.325.
