New details have emerged for the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. The United States Mint on Monday published a product page that includes descriptions of the set’s eight coins, its mintage limits, initial ordering limits and an image of it, which is immediately below.
The U.S. Mint also placed the proof set back on schedule with its original release date of November 27, 2012 and at the previously announced price of $149.95.
Silver Coins in Limited Edition Silver Proof Set
As first speculated about in this coin news article, the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set includes the following proof silver coins:
- 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle (1)
- 2012-S Kennedy half-dollar (1)
- 2012-S America the Beautiful Quarters (5)
- 2012-S Roosevelt dime (1)
The proof American Silver Eagle is struck at the West Point Mint and composed of one-ounce of 99.9% fine silver. It is the same coin that went for $59.95 until last week when it sold out.
The smaller denominated coins are produced at the San Francisco Mint and are composed from 90% silver. These are the same seven silver coins that come with the 2012 Silver Proof Set, which also includes eight clad coins. The annual set is priced at $67.95.
Combined, the limited edition set includes 2.338 troy ounces of silver.
This year’s quarters depict El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico, Acadia National Park in Maine, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, and Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska.
Ordering and Mintage Limits
A mintage limit of 50,000 units is in place for the proof set. Initial ordering limits are established at two per household.
Beginning at noon ET on November 27, 2012, the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set may be ordered through this online product page, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
[Update: The shipping time has been updated on the product page to show "late December."]
So you could have bought a proof ase coin for $60 and an annual silver proof set (with 8 clad coins) for $68 for a total of $128… Or you can buy this set for $150, all figures rounded off. Must be some awesome packaging to be worth $150!
Well think about it. Where else can you get a silver eagle that’s not individually encapsulated? And who wants a silver proof set that contains a penny, a nickel, and all those disgusting golden dollars that don’t have any silver in them? And packaged with a black and white picture of the flag?
I gotta believe this is another Peterson fiasco, the Edsel of the US Mint – his last opportunity before he’s ousted by the new director of the mint.
This is just so stupid. Sorry.
I’m all for “Limited Edition” stuff, but the pricing just makes no sense here.
Maybe if they super-glued another ASE to the back of the box I’d jump in….but right now, this is just overpriced bs.
C’mon, USMint! You’re better than this (I hope!). There’s nothing special about the packaging that’s going to drive the price up. This is a really bad way to end the year (yet consistent for 2012).
I’m looking forward to some new leadership in 2013. Someone who hopefully listens to the collecting community!
At least make the stars & stripes background in COLOR for crying out loud..! God, you people at the mint are so freaking STUPID..!! Does the phrase RED WHITE & BLUE mean anything to you morons? The SSB set was so colorful and visually appealing, AND it was a pretty good value for the money. So, THEN you turn around and do this silly overpriced gimmick. US MINT; Keep your garbage. I’ll go to Hobby Lobby and craft myself a nicer looking display package with my own 2 hands. Not to mention the fact that Hobby Lobby deserves my support… Read more »
Kevin: good post–constructive. Jim/George: Had your blood pressure checked lately? Get over it and pay attention to Kevin. H.A.N.D.
Gouging must be their specialty cause they should be taking away the packing price they did on both of the previous sets first before pricing out this new product(the silver proof coins and the American eagle set). This seems like an awful lot for what you get.
Reminds me of the Silver Premier Set ’92 – ’98. The fancy velvet hinged cigarette holder, still commanding a $$$ premium for no intelligent reason. Or the sets with ASE within a circle of golden dollars around it. They just keep throwing S#%T against the wall to see whats sticks, without any sense of beginning or end tied to a series of product…??? P.T. Barnum is laughing his ass off. Soon the U.S. Mint will follow the Post Office into the grave hand in hand. How many FDC’s are worth issue price??? I was laughing, but soon it will be… Read more »
George…
As allways, in your corner!
its just an idea, probably not the best! I’m thankful, $ in pocket, for the two other great ideas, 2011 25th ASE set & 2012-s ASE set’s. Some work so do not!
I can see it now…These will end up on HSN being sold by the one and only Mike Mesak and graded by Anacs as PF69 or PF70 and slapped in a “Red Oak” presentation box and sold for ONLY $395.00…HAHAHAHA!!!
Wassup Ronnie??
So NOW is it a good time to sell my Lucy Hayes UNC? I’m still holding her tightly!
Put me down for $zero!!! This appears to be just another bad joke by the U.S. Mint. I thought that the San Francisco 2-coin Silver Eagle Anniversary set was seriously over-priced, and now comes this insult to my 3rd grade arithmetic skills. I’m really trying to see the value here, but I just can’t find anything worth $149.95 in packaging and product. Maybe I’m missing something in the press release…
george, don’t sell until after $3000/oz spot price.
Boy I haven’t laughed so hard on coin news since forever, you guys cut me up ! Thanks for the perspective. But really, on HSN ?! Try me in the alley, behind the mint, with my open trench coat. “Pssst, hey buddy, wanna buy some Silva ?”
If you look hard, you may find.
At least they stop milking the 2012-S proof silver eagle…
Now you know what the Mint does with all those coins and marked up sets you’ve returned to them this year. Why melt them; lets first try our luck at to sticking it to the unsuspecting coin collector… they’ve been known to buy anything we put in front of them. Go Green!!! oops, I meant Silver!!!
To the Mint: We the jaded collecting populace are not likely to bite for a new and expensive annual set unless we know that the series is going to last longer than the term of the current Mint Director.
LOL!
Who is the Mint Director Alan ?
Nope, at this moment our Mint Director is Peterson. And by he way, considering the coins being offered in this set, can Peterson really call these coins a “Limited Edition?” If the Mint wasn’t so greedy, they could have been a little more imaginative considering the price they’re asking, and reduce the mintage to say 15,000 with a one per household limit. Now that might help get the juices flowing. And Peterson, I have to say that the problem we have here has got to be all your fault, we can’t blame Canada for this one. At least when the… Read more »
If I was Director of the Mint (which I’m not) my definition of a 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set would be the following: the American Silver Eagle would be a reverse proof high relief in piedfort thickness; ditto those specs for the Kennedy Half in .999 silver; ditto again for the quarters in .999 silver; and once more for the .999 silver Roosevelt Dime. Except, the eight coins would all be struck at the mother mint in Philadelphia. Mintage would be struck to demand and the price would be $250 and worth it if struck with my specs. But… Read more »
Stuart, Like the specs, but if struck to demand it would not be limited.
Wheeler for Director in 2013 !!!!
Head in hands, head shaking in disgust. The shame of it all !!!! Please mint director fairy, give us someone who will listen to the collector base and understands that change is due.
Realy… US MINT Realy…Why would I buy this set? NO, Why should anyone buy this set? All I see is Repeats coins in a New Case. Who collects U.S. mint cases? $149.95 Why? This Limited Edition Silver Set is ABSURD.
Special Editions, Limited Editions and Anniversarys should be Memorable Coins. Not Repeats or Crap for Sale.
US MINT! You Know Whats Memorable? If your Crapy 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set “all coins were Minted at West Point” Mint Mark W. Your Welcome.
This is depressing!
Obviously Peterson is out of touch with reality and has no concept of what a collectable coin is. ROBVALE, you’re right – if all the <$1 coins had a W mint mark the set would indeed be a collectable although a W dime was minted in 1996 and the uncirculated set it came in sells for ~$10+/- so clearly not that big a deal.
Thanksgiving leftovers.
Joe, Good one !
I’m really dissappointed about this set. When I first heard about it, I was so excited there might be some cool unique coins to this set. But it’s all crap.
Highly disappointed.
Mike When is your next prime time show?
JF6, Now, We could start a rumor, How do we know they’re not clad ?!
Alms for the poor, Alms for the poor !
so who is gonna buy one(two)?
The Mint can forget about my business on this one. I won’t be one of thoese that buys twenty sets and trys to resales on ebay and ends up stuck with them. Realy Why buy one? That Set is NOT a LIMITED EDITION. Maybe the blue case is. I hope people realize is just the same proof coin the mint issue several week ago.
Bring back the silver buffalo!! I’ll drink to that.
Awesome packaging! What are the grading procedures so that everyone will know that I paid a lot higher than I would have had to? Surely there is a special label from the grading company to show these coins didn’t come out of the commoners sets. Although I will probably buy my 2 sets and just spend the coins. It’s the packaging I collect and this could be really rare packaging.
wait a month. They’ll be giving them away on HSN
Hello from an American living in Germany. Yes, I have ordered the 2012 limited proofset. Annie is right. So it costs more than the sum of the coins in silver proof sets plus the 2012 W Liberty. Have you ever seen a proof set limited to 50,000 sets? Just take a look at the annual 2012 Silver Proof Set selling at unheard of numbers! To date, over 33,000 sets have been sold. Sellout probably in March/April. Thereafter, watch out for the run’ On Ebay.com, there is one of the limited set selling at the current price $175,00 with a couple… Read more »
Okay Mr MarkM, you got us all! We the collectors don’t appreciate when the mint resells there unsold items with the word Special Edition or Limited Edition. I dont give a dam whats the silver or gold market at this time. only Fools pay extra for this set. The minting of 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set could be at 1,000 sets and still is the value is at melt value because is NOT A TRUE LIMITED EDITION. What it is, unsold silver egles and proof set put all together in one new box. We the collectors want new exciting… Read more »
Hello Robvale! Thank you for your opinion and I appreciate it. Never an offence. Open mind! That’s me. Please tell me why collectors are paying $200,00/$250 in the States I’ll be selling mine in Germany and hope for Euro 180,00 or $240,00. I’d be happy with that. Sprichte du Deutsch? Greetings, Mark
Collectors buy their coins in the first weeks/months a coin is available from the original source. They buy collectable coins for their rarity and beauty, not for their packaging. As has been said many times before these coin sets are unique only in their packaging and not in their content. There must be some heavy advertising with emphasis on the word LIMITED that makes these novices think the sets have some extra value and are worth buying. They don’t and they’re not. But if you can make money off these dupes then more power to you. There’s one born every… Read more »
Hello Jim, I have no problem with your view of things concerning the 2012 limited SILVER proof set. The Euro rate of Euro 1,00 = $0,75 is a advantage for me too. If customs stops the package from the mint, then I’ll have to pay an additional 19% SALES TAX! Yes, 19%. You see, the German goverment takes the money wherever they can get it! That’s how a social state exists. There are two reasons why I purchased this ‘limited’ silver proof set: 1. In modern times, there has never been a pure silver proof set .No penny and no… Read more »
Hello Jim, Robval!
Ich habe den Kelch niedergeworfen!!!!! I’ve thrown down the goblet! After considering the dismaying results on Ebay, I finally decided to cancel my order! Thank you for your comments.
Coin Collectors, or Coin Complainers..? Look, we all know that silver is probably the best thing anyone can invest in these days besides maybe a generator, oil, gas and a few other things..The two coin Silver Eagle Set with the reverse proof eagle prior to this set was a total flop. This set does at least give you some classy packaging and allot of the Silver Proof Coins a true Collector should have from 2012. 2012 was a huge and historic year for silver and the coins that were minted. Try to buy a 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle for under… Read more »
O_o ? Do you work for the mint? What ever! Some people don’t get it…
Do you know what coin guide that Mike Mesak uses on HSN? He always says his prices are from a National advertised catalog. He always holds it in his hand along with his female co host.
The US Mint really screwed up big time in 2011 and 2012 and I was really losing faith in their antics. I placed orders with them, and they failed to debit my credit cards and process my orders – never received any product. They promised improvements for 2013. Fortunately, there appears to be progress in 2013, but watch out – their antics may come out to bite us all again!
I would love to see what all these early posters on this set have to say now. The set on Ebay is now selling for $420 or so. Give or take $20. And is only going to go up in price. All the coins from 2012 were super low mintage in the Silver and Clad states so this is just helping the price of this set. I am glad I put my order into the mint really early and was able to get this Set when it was ony $150. To all the people who cancel’ed there order. Why? you… Read more »
Sorry Chris, your point is mute unless you sell your set. Until that happens you’ve still been screwed out of $150 bucks IMHO.
Chris, I know the half and dime are the lowest mintages for the silver coins in any year. The Kennedy 50 year anniversary is coming up later in the year and people are looking for those coins. The ” Coin Vault” show complained they are having trouble finding any substantial quantity for sale and then complained how high the asking price is now. I rarely buy from them but, they do provide some good information.
Chris, you’re an idiot! we all have does same coins from other set that were already offered. The coins are the same mint mark same year same style and same value! That set you have is not a special issue is just the same coins from the previous set.
@mercury
@Chris’ point is mute? His point can’t speak?
I think you mean moot.
so do you all regret not buying this set?
