Koala silver coins are a staple of the Perth Mint of Australia’s portfolio and two new ones have been issued that expand that line-up dedicated to the marsupial. They include the 2013 Australian Koala 1 Ounce Silver Colored Coin and the 2013 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Proof Coin.
Both are struck from 99.9% pure silver and feature the same basic reverse design. The two coins are quite different from there as one is massively large and the other has coloring.
Reverses on the silver coins show an adult koala nestled on the branch of an eucalyptus tree with gum leaves surrounding the creature. The image is the work of Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan. For the coin in color, the tree and its leaves have been shaded to their true-life hues. Reverse inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN KOALA, 2013, 999 SILVER and the weight of each coin, 1 KILO or 1 oz.
Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of both silver coins. Inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and 30 DOLLARS for the kilo silver coins and 1 DOLLAR for the coins in color.
The Perth Mint presents the kilo coin in a classic black Perth display case along with an illustrated shipper and a numbered certificate of authenticity. The colored coin is presented in an illustrated display card which also lists the coin’s specifications.
