2013 Discover Australia 1 oz Silver Proof Coins are available from the Perth Mint of Australia. The coins showcase colorful reverse designs depicting indigenous Australian creatures set against their natural habitats.
Featured are a kangaroo, a koala, an emu, a kookaburra and a platypus. All five are struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver and are available individually or as part of a five-coin set.
Mintages are limited. The Perth Mint indicates no more than 3,500 of the individual proof coins will be released. The maximum mintage for the five-coin is 1,500.
Discover Australia Silver Proof Coin Designs
Brief design details are offered for each of the coins in the following paragraphs.
The 2013 Kangaroo Silver Proof Coin offers a single kangaroo in a crouched position in front of an Australian outback scene. The background is complete with wild spring grasses and Australian boab trees.
A koala is shown with a stump of a eucalyptus tree on the 2013 Koala Silver Proof Coin. The colorful background includes a forest and a picturesque sunset.
On the 2013 Emu Silver Proof Coin, the front portion of the bird and its large legs can be seen. Behind the bird, the Australian desert is shown with wild flowers and grasses.
As for the 2013 Kookaburra Silver Proof Coin, the bird is depicted with its wings stretched out. An Australian river scene is displayed behind.
For the 2013 Platypus Silver Proof Coin, the creature is shown in a full-length image. A tropical rainforest background completes the design.
Inscriptions on the reverse of the proof coins include "DISCOVER AUSTRALIA," "2013," "1 OZ 999 SILVER," the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mint mark and the name of the creature showcased on the coin with "KANGAROO," "KOALA," "EMU," "KOOKABURRA" or "PLATYPUS."
Each is legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Accordingly, Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverses. Each obverse also includes the inscriptions of "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and the face value of "1 DOLLAR."
The individual Discover Australia Coins are presented in a display case with timber lid. The five-coin set offers a similar case which holds the complete set. Both ship inside an illustrated shipper. A numbered certificate of authenticity is also included.
