New data from the United States Mint offers debut sales for Great Basin Quarters Three-Coin Sets and reflects augmented interest in gold coins.
Across its range of numismatic products, 67 outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 39 noted in the previous sales report. But for the most part, improvements were very modest.
Gold coins locked in the higher increases, supported by U.S. Mint price cuts last week. The standout was the 2013-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle, jumping 1,227 to 4,311 compared to its prior advance of 384. The companion proof Gold Eagle climbed just 55 to 9,046. It rose last time by 66. Other proof sizes fared better with combined unit sales up 349 versus 181 previously.
On the horizon, sales of gold coins could be challenged once again. Another round of price cuts was missed today by one penny. Collectors who watch gold prices and compare them to the Mint’s coin pricing guide will stay their buying hand unless gold surges before next Wednesday.
Silver products were mixed. While some silver sets performed better, demand fell for individually sold silver coins. The sales total for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle actually tumbled 7,262 to a level not seen since mid-June. Collectors appear to be waiting and hoping for a cut in silver coin prices, a move the U.S. Mint said it was considering.
Starting sales for the Great Basin Quarters Three-Coin Set clocked in at 9,452 between its release on Tuesday, June 25, and Sunday, June 30. That is 172 below the sales start for the previous set with Perry’s Victory quarters. For a quick comparison, here are debut sales for newest and past three-coin sets:

Yes, I sent some ASE-W coins back, awaiting a price cut. It was only a few dozen, a mere fraction of the thousands that were retuned. 🙂
I bought some early on and had them graded by NGC. I was pleased that over 80% merited a perfect 70 grade. Yes, I paid more for the early releases label. Some in the coin world disagree with grading, and I understand. But I sell most at a profit and then the few I keep are “free.”
Nice score Kevin on your mint state 70 ASE-W coins. I pretty much do the same as far as buying and selling also.
