Three new U.S. Mint products debuted last week. Stealing the thunder and continuing to on a daily basis is the 2013 Reverse Proof Gold Buffalo.
Released last Thursday, sales of 26,905 by Tuesday more than doubled the regular proof version which climbed 524 to 12,821. Worth noting, earlier today the United States Mint raised prices on platinum and gold coins, including those of the regular proof and reverse proof Gold Buffalo.
It’ll be curious to see daily sales of the reverse proof going forward. Sales conclude on September 5 for the 24-karat gold coin. There is always a natural drop around the middle weeks for products that have ordering deadlines. In this case, there may be some mild swings in that time as potential buyers watch and react to possible pricing changes each week. That appears to have happened today. Sales picked up a touch from Tuesday as collectors may have moved from the sidelines when they realized the reverse proof’s price was moving up $50 to $1,690. The following table offers the daily increases for the coin since its release.
Daily Sales of 2013 Reverse Proof Gold Buffalo
Daily Sales | Total Sales | |
---|---|---|
Thursday | Released | |
Friday | 21,009 | 21,009 |
Weekend | ||
Monday | 3,874 | 24,883 |
Tuesday | 2,022 | 26,905 |
Wednesday | 2,548 | 29,453 |
Because they cost so much more than clad or silver products, it’s unusual to see a gold coin as the Mint’s best weekly seller but that is indeed the case.

Better gains were seen across all platinum coins, most gold coins, all but one of the commemorative coin products and all but one of the proof sets. Silver coins and sets were mixed.
Sales Debut of 5-Star Generals Profiles Collection, William Howard Taft $1 Coin Cover
Also released last week along with the reverse proof Gold Buffalo was the 5-Star Generals Profiles Collection for $74.95 and the 2013 William Howard Taft Presidential $1 Coin Cover for $19.95. Both made it onto the Mint’s top selling list.
Released on August 5, collectors ordered 3,180 of the 5-Star Generals Profiles Collection, which includes an uncirculated silver dollar, an uncirculated clad half-dollar and a bronze medal replica of the 1962 General MacArthur Congressional Gold Medal. The price of the uncirculated coins purchased separately is more than the collection which also has special packaging and the bronze medal. Weekly sales of the individual uncirculated 5-Star Generals Silver Dollar went up 710 to 51,636 while that of the uncirculated 5-Star Generals Clad Half Dollar advanced 368 to 20,910.
Lastly, the William Howard Taft $1 Coin Cover launched on August 6. The coin cover’s opening five-day sales total came in at 10,115, or a bit more than half of its 20,000 product limit. The tally is lower than the immediate previous coin cover featuring Theodore Roosevelt. It started at 11,422.
