This year’s series is dedicated to the five branches of the United States Armed Forces where last year’s Ideals in Allegory series was dedicated to the female allegorical figures symbolizing peace, justice, and liberty.

"The ‘Navy’ print features an exquisite compilation of unique engraved vignettes focusing on the age-old art of intaglio printing," describes the Bureau of Engraving.

Officially called the 2014 Intaglio Print Defenders of Freedom Navy, each print measure 8 1/2" x 11" and is $22.50. The latest print features three major decorative designs:

  • Near the top left is the Vignette (Sailor) Miscellaneous Die #17627. It was engraved by Joseph S. Creamer, Jr., in 1966 from a photograph furnished by the Defense Department. An offset version was used on $5 Military Payment Certificate, Series 681.

  • Nearer the right and further below is the Vignette (Submarine) Miscellaneous Die #17626. It was engraved by Edward R. Felver, also in 1966 and from a photograph furnished by the Defense Department. It has been used on "Significant Events of the 20th Century" souvenir cards and the BEP Gift Shop.

  • Centered at the bottom is an image of the $20 Military Payment Certificate, Series 691. The Vignette, Miscellaneous Die #908: ‘America’ Head, was engraved by Alfred Sealey in 1869 and used for the Export Tobacco Stamp in 1872, and on a Plate Printers’ Ball ticket.

Separating the two top vignettes from the bottom vignette is the emblem of the United States Navy which is embossed in gold foil. Found topmost on the card is a banner with the words: DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM. Bottommost is a banner stating: Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
