US Mint Sales: Proof Set Tops 800,000

2014 United States Mint Proof Set
The 2014 Mint Proof Set was the top U.S. Mint selling product. Also, last year’s set topped the 800,00 milestone.

Collectors turned to annual sets and Silver Eagles without new product releases last week, the latest U.S. Mint sales figures show.

Of interest, the Mint’s clad Proof Set for 2013 rose 1,028 to top 800,000. That’s a milestone missed a year earlier when the 2012 Proof Set went off sale at 794,002 for the weakest total since 1956.

While the 2013 Proof Set is one of the older U.S. Mint products still available, it was still a popular weekly seller at the eleventh spot. But the leader, like in the previous sales report, was this year’s clad 2014 Proof Set. Released 10 weeks ago, it’s near 350,000 in sales.

  9. 2014 Uncirculated Silver Eagles (+1,325 to 149,459)
  10. 2014 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set 1,286 to 85,869)
  11. 2013 Proof Set (+1,028 to 800,525)

This week the U.S. Mint reported sales updates to 235 numismatic products. Of those with a sales history of at least two weeks, 56 outperformed their previous weekly sales compared to 27 previously. Twelve products increased by more than 1,000 units versus 13 in the prior report.

2014-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagle

Gold coin orders fell across the board. The 2014-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagle gained 226 in its first full week of availability and has sales of 2,077. It and other gold products should get some extra attention this week since the Mint cut prices earlier today.

Sales Overview for 50c Baseball Coins

2014 50c National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins climbed 6,799 compared to the previous week’s gain of 9,311. Orders of the half-dollars total 277,381 for 37% of the maximum 750,000. Sales are at 177,539 for the proof and 98,842 for the uncirculated for percentage splits of 64% and 36%.

Update on Sold Out Great Smoky Mountains Silver Coin

Sales of the 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin ended two weeks ago. Last week’s report brought its total down 679 and this latest report has it down 2 to an even 24,740.

Wow! Those HOF coins are spawning their own market niche, in an added plus for the hobby. Last week I speculated that putting HOF Players on the HOF coins would be a GREAT way to start a new series. Only a few days later comes PCGS with a wide array of signatures (and cut signatures of resting HOF players) on the labels as a way to make differentiated sales of these beautiful gems. I said maybe the player’s images would be neat to see, and as fast as PCGS could say “got it” there they were in that market. Kudos… Read more »

I thought the mint would have finish off the proof sets by now. I would assume they are very close to being sold out. I wonder why the mint doesn’t state that items are 90% or 95% sold out, etc. like the Canadian Mint does. In addition, from what I’m seeing, the mint could sell a little over 20,000 more of the uncirculated mint sets and still be at a 52 year low! I have 1962’s set at 385,285 from my research. The annual uncirculated dollar set can sell just under 9,150 more sets to make the 2013 Silver Eagle… Read more »
