Appearing on U.S. Mint sales charts for the first time are the 2014-W $10 Lou Hoover First Spouse Gold Coins in proof and uncirculated finishes. Released on Aug. 14, they mark the third of four designs this year to honor former First Ladies.
Collectors in the early going ordered 955 of the proof Lou Hoover gold coins and 638 of the uncirculated Lou Hoover gold coins for a total of 1,593 — the highest start this year in the one-half ounce, 24-karat gold series.
In contrast, starting sales for the immediate prior spousal gold coins featuring Grace Coolidge totaled 1,541 with splits of 896 proof and 645 uncirculated. The latest sales figures have the proof up 264 to 1,765 and the uncirculated up 107 to 1,072 for a total of 2,837 coins.

This week the U.S. Mint reported sales updates to 260 numismatic products. Of those with a sales history of at least two weeks, 50 outperformed their prior weekly sales compared to 87 previously. Seven products increased by more than 1,000 units versus the 9 from the previous report.

Also, the U.S. Mint briefly noted that its 2013 Mint Set sold out. Sales of the set through to Sunday stood at 368,553 — the lowest total since the 1961 Mint Set ended with sales of 223,704. However, the Mint started selling the sets again later on Wednesday.

It does not seem very efficient to continue marketing low-selling products for months and years. The stocking of items that just sit in vaults or cabinets must take up tremendous amounts of space, adding to the contractual overhead the mint must pay in its deals with Pitney Bowes and the other fulfillment vendors. Interesting for the collector though is trying to second guess the off chance that production may be cut back and/or sales abruptly cut off. We’ve had some such surprises in the past. Boz, I don’t know if the Mint is clever enough to think of a marketing strategy. I’m inclined to think it was (another) error.
It reminds me of the Braille coins fiasco. That’s one coin that I lost money on. And I’m thinking that the US mint never marketed these to people that can’t see. Big mistake.
