2014 Hades High Relief Coin Ends Gods of Olympus Series

Closing out the popular Gods of Olympus three-coin program, the Perth Mint of Australia has released the 2014 Hades High Relief 2 oz Silver Coin.

Shown on the reverse of the unique rimless, antique finish coin is a design depicting the mythical god Hades. Mintage is limited to just 1,500 coins.

"In ancient Greek mythology, Hades was worshipped as the God of the Underworld and the ruler of the dead," describes the Perth Mint. "In addition to the underworld, he ruled over any and all things beneath the Earth, and for this reason he was also known as the God of Wealth as he presided over all the precious metals that existed underground."

The Gods of Olympus series debuted earlier this year with a coin showcasing a reverse design of Zeus. It was followed a few months later with the Poseidon silver coin. Both issues quickly sold out thanks to their unique designs and limited mintages.

Hades Coin Designs and Specifications

On the reverse of this coin and as designed by Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan, Hades is shown sitting on his throne made of bones and skulls. His three-headed watchdog, Cerberus, can be seen to the right. The high relief reverse is struck with an antique finish and features a rimless design. "HADES" is inscribed below the image.

Each coin is struck by the Perth Mint as legal tender of the island nation of Tuvalu. An obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley is surrounded by the inscriptions of "QUEEN ELIZABETH II," "2 oz 999 SILVER," "2014," "TUVALU" and "2 DOLLARS."
