New from the Perth Mint of Australia is its 2015 Nautilus 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin. Struck in 99.9% pure silver, it depicts an integral part of a classic science fiction novel by Jules Verne.
This collectible coin is issued as the sixth release in the Perth Mint’s Famous Ships that Never Sailed series. Mintage for the piece is very limited at 3,000.
"The Perth Mint is pleased to present the latest coin in the popular Famous Ships that Never Sailed series, the Nautilus," touts the Perth Mint on its website. "This deadly submarine features in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a classic science fiction novel written by French author Jules Verne and published in 1870. One of the most highly acclaimed novels of its time, the story remains one of Verne’s greatest works."
The Famous Ships that Never Sailed series has found a following with collectors since its debut in 2013. Included in the program are silver coins that have or will depict the following imaginary ships:

- Gloria Scott (issued in 2014)

Nautilus Silver Coin Designs and Specifications
A likeness of the fictional submarine Nautilus appears on the reverse of the 2015 Nautilus 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin. Depicted as it might appear submerged, ancient ruins can be seen below the vessel with two sailing ships shown above. ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ and ‘The Nautilus‘ are inscribed around the design.
Struck as Tuvalu legal tender, the obverse of these proof quality coins feature portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. Her effigy, as completed by Ian Rank-Broadley, is surrounded by the inscriptions of QUEEN ELIZABETH II, TUVALU, ONE DOLLAR. 1 OZ 999 SILVER and 2015.
Each coin has a minimum gross weight of 31.135 grams, a maximum diameter of 40.60 mm and a maximum thickness of 4.00 mm.
