Several United States Mint products debut on sales charts this week, including proof American Gold Eagles, commemorative March of Dimes Silver Dollars and a proof set of Presidential dollars.
Starting sales of the new proof Gold Eagles strengthened for a third year in a row, U.S. Mint sales figures show. Released a week ago on March 12, coin collectors by March 15 scooped up 20,655 coins for a total of 10,007.85 ounces. In other recent years:
- 2014 Proof Gold Eagles opened with sales of 18,309 coins for a total of 9,301.10 ounces;
- 2013 Proof Gold Eagles started with sales of 9,370 coins for a total of 4,480.15 ounces;
- 2012 Proof Gold Eagles opened with sales of 8,369 coins for a total of 4,234.55 ounces; and
- 2011 Proof Gold Eagles started with sales of 29,353 coins for a total of 15,902.55 ounces.
Stronger starts in recent years have been supported by less expensive coin prices — triggered by weakness in precious metals markets. As examples, the one-ounce 2015-W $50 Proof American Gold Eagle at $1,510 is $100 less than when last year’s coin debuted, and $200 less than when the one from 2013 launched. In 2012, the same coin opened with a price tag of $1,935.
Here’s a table showing how the 2015-W Proof Gold Eagles performed early into their release:
