Gold, silver and other precious metals futures moved higher on Tuesday as safe-haven demand improved and the U.S. dollar gave up some ground.
Gold for June delivery advanced $9.40, or 0.8%, to settle at $1,192.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold prices ended the U.S. day session moderately higher Tuesday, boosted on short covering, bargain hunting and even some safe-haven demand," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a report. "A lower U.S. dollar index and higher crude oil prices on this day worked in favor of the precious metals bulls."
Gold prices ranged from a low of $1,179.70 to a high of $1,196.30. They slipped 0.5% in the previous session.
Silver for July delivery jumped 21 cents, or 1.3%, to $16.53 an ounce, trading between $16.12 and $16.60. Silver prices declined on Monday by 0.9%.
