Earlier today, May 14, the United States Mint released its 14-coin 2015 Silver Proof Set for $53.95. This product is one of the Mint’s core annual offerings and one of its most popular. Hundreds of thousands will sell when all is said and done.
A major draw for the sets are the silver coins. Also, proof coins are collector favorites because they have sharper reliefs, mirror-like backgrounds and attractive frosted foregrounds. Greater care is taken in making proofs. The U.S. Mint polishes the blanks, polishes the dies, presses the coins more than once and then uses robotics to package the coins. Human hands never touch them.
Every coin in this silver set is produced at the U.S. Mint in San Francisco and carries the ‘S’ mint mark. They include:
- 2015-S Harry S. Truman Presidential $1 Coin
- 2015-S Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential $1 Coin
- 2015-S John F. Kennedy Presidential $1 Coin
- 2015-S Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential $1 Coin
- 2015-S Native American $1 Coin
- 2015-S Kennedy Half-Dollar
- 2015-S Homestead National Monument of America Quarter (Nebraska)
- 2015-S Kisatchie National Forest Quarter (Louisiana)
- 2015-S Blue Ridge Parkway Quarter (North Carolina)
- 2015-S Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Quarter (Delaware)
- 2015-S Saratoga National Historical Park Quarter (New York)
- 2015-S Roosevelt Dime
- 2015-S Jefferson Nickel
- 2015-S Lincoln Cent
The Kennedy half-dollar, five America the Beautiful Quarters and Roosevelt dime are composed in 90% silver with the remaining balance copper. Their silver weight tallies to 1.338 troy ounces valued at about $23.28, based on today’s London silver price of $17.40 an ounce. The remaining 7 coins are in compositions that match their circulating versions. All 14 coins have a combined face value of $6.91.
Unique to this year, because they bear one-year only designs, are the four Presidential $1 Coins, the Native American $1 Coin, and the five America the Beautiful Quarters.
Not all coins of the set are exclusive to it. Other U.S. Mint products have some of them. For example, the same 5 silver quarters are in the 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set for $31.95 (see photos of the quarters set), the same 4 clad dollars are in the 2015 Presidential Proof Set for $18.95 (see photos of the dollar set), and the same 7 clad coins are in the standard 2015 Proof Set for $32.95 (see photos of the clad set).
