Gold and silver futures settled higher Thursday as the U.S. dollar backed off some from earlier gains.
Gold for December delivery climbed $4.50, or 0.4%, to close at $1,090.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"We’re seeing a mild consolidation rally," Reuters quoted Bill O’Neill, co-founder of commodities investment firm LOGIC Advisors in New Jersey. "The dollar has lost a little ground and we have nervousness surrounding equities."
Gold prices ranged from a low of $1,082.70 to a high of $1,093.30. They declined in the prior session by $5.10 or 0.5%.
Silver for September delivery advanced 12 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $14.68 an ounce. Silver prices traded between $14.49 and $14.74. They edged down on Wednesday by less than a penny.
In PGM futures on Thursday:

October platinum turned up $5.10, or 0.5%, to $956 an ounce, ranging from $946 to $959.10.
- Palladium for September delivery gained $6.80, or 1.2%, to $599.80 an ounce, trading between $591.55 and $602.50.
London Precious Metals Prices
Earlier fixed London gold and silver prices rose modestly. In comparing London bullion prices from Wednesday PM to Thursday PM:
- Gold added $4.65, or 0.4%, to $1,089.75 an ounce.
- Silver rose 7 cents, or 0.5%, to $14.59 an ounce.
LBMA platinum and palladium prices are displayed on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight after the setting of the prices each day.
