Precious metals closed higher Tuesday, with gold and silver gaining for the first time in three sessions.
Gold for December delivery added $4.70, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,177.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"After jumping around $90 since the beginning of the month to trade at a near four-month high above $1,190, gold has slipped to trade towards $1,170 as traders take profit on the metal," MarketWatch quoted Jameel Ahmad, chief market analyst at FXTM. Gold has gained about 5.5% in October, according to FactSet.
Gold prices traded from a low of $1,167.20 to a high of $1,177.50. Prices fell 0.9% on Monday.
Elsewhere, silver for December delivery gained 8 cents, or 0.5%, to close at $15.92 an ounce. Silver prices ranged from $15.76 to $15.97. They fell 1.7% in the prior session.

January platinum rose $5.50, or 0.5%, to $1,020.10 an ounce, trading between $1,006.80 and $1,024.90.
- Palladium for December delivery tacked on $6.75, or 1%, to $694.85 an ounce, ranging from $681.25 to $700.
London Precious Metals Prices
Earlier fixed London gold and silver prices changed modestly or not at all. In comparing their prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold edged up $2.35, 0.2%, to $1,177.75 an ounce.
- Silver was unchanged at $15.86 an ounce.
LBMA platinum and palladium prices are available on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight.
