After seeing other gold coins become unavailable in the past two weeks or so, I had a feeling the Buffalo Proof was going to be next. I thought the 15 burnished gold Eagle had a chance at becoming the lowest mintage, but it seems unlikely since it’s still available and so close to the 12’s mintage already.
Yesterday morning Friday November 27, 2015 @ 05:25 AM PST, the U.S. Mint website had briefly available a few 2015-W American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coins for sale for $1,440.00 each. However around 10 minutes later they were again listed as unavailable.
The 2015 Gold Buffalo first strikes will explode in value….especially the 70’s from PCGS. Wow…..
I’m on the fence about abrupt ending of sales. On the one hand people looking for low mintage coins lost out unless they bought earlier (too bad, they had 7 months to buy). On the other hand regular buyers of the coin got a surprise rarity with the low mintage. Of course the coin has to be popular for it’s rarity to be meaningful; look at the spouse coins, how few of those are made and nobody cares.
I just ordered a 2015 buffalo this morning, November 29th @ 7:50 am EST! I hope its not a dealer reject. If so it’ll be returned to the mint the day after it arrives. It may just be the mint pulling another fast one on the public to generate more sales.
Never mind my last statement about the mint pulling a fast one, the 2015 gold buffalo was listed as unavailable again 10 minutes after I ordered one.
The 2015-W American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin had sold only 16,243 units as of November 23, 2015 since its release on April 9, 2015. This coin now has the lowest mintage in the series of American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coins. The previous lowest mintage had been the 2013-W American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin @ 18,594. Prior to that, the lowest mintage had been the 2008-W American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin @ 18,863. On ebay a 2008-W Buffalo Gold Proof one troy oz. coin auctioned for $2,451.03 as item # 221873188069 by jesussavesterri… Read more »
Like I said, those buying the fractional set got a surprise rarity when only the 7803 sets were sold and the mint didn’t offer the set again. They might have sold more sets if they had announced that 2008 was the only year they would be offered.
Similar surprise when the 10th anniversary eagle set contained the first W mint silver eagle (only 30,125) and it wasn’t so obvious that was going to happen. No fewer than 400,000 have been sold in any year since except in 2009 when no proof or uncirculated silver eagles were minted.
As of Sunday November 29, 2015, the no longer available 2015-W American Buffalo Gold Proof One Troy Ounce Coins have sold 16,436 units.
