Unique is one word that can be used to describe the new limited-edition 2016 Odin 2 oz Silver High Relief Antiqued Coin from the Perth Mint of Australia.
Struck in two ounces of 99.9% pure silver and in antique finish with a rimless attribute, the reverse portrays a charging Odin, the King of Asgard, and the obverse offers a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II — both in high relief.
This coin serves as the inaugural strike in the Perth Mint’s new Norse Gods series, and has a maximum mintage of just 2,000. Subsequent releases will carry reverse designs depicting Thor and Loki. The series follows the Gods of Olympus and Goddess of Olympus programs. Included in the two previous series were the following coins:
- Zeus Silver Coin (February 2014)
- Poseidon Silver Coin (June 2014)
- Hades Silver Coin (October 2014)
- Hera Silver Coin (February 2015)
- Athena Silver Coin (June 2015)
- Aphrodite Silver Coin (September 2015)
Coins of these two similar programs sold out almost immediately.

FYI –
The Perth Mint Australia produced its first 2 oz .999 silver high relief antique finish rimless plain edge Kangaroo coin of Australia legal tender last month January 2016 (limited mintage 3,000 coins) due to the popularity of their 2014 & 2016 similar coins as described in this CoinNews coin blog website article. A beautiful coin with a great holder that suspends the coin inside the frame for an art gallery appearance.
Happy coin collecting everyone!

FYI –
I forgot one interesting detail. According to the Perth Mint Australia website, the laws of Australia require that 10% of the mintage total of all legal tender coins produced there must be reserved for customers who reside in Australia.
