The United States Mint today, March 17, released five collectible products featuring varying sizes and quantities of 2016-W American Eagle Gold Proof Coins.
American Gold Eagles are produced in 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz. and 1/10 oz. sizes with corresponding denominations of $50, $25, $10 and $5. Product choices include each coin size and a four-coin set that has them all.
Struck for coin collectors and unlike the bullion versions made for investors, these proofs have frosted designs with mirror-like fields and they bear ‘W’ mint marks from West Point Mint. Released annually since 1986, Gold Eagles share the same designs and 22-karat gold composition.

Coin Designs and Specifications
On their obverse or heads side, American Gold Eagles feature Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Liberty with flowing hair holding a lit torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. A small image of the U.S. Capitol building appears behind Liberty along with stretching rays of sunshine. Surrounding the design are 50 stars and inscriptions of LIBERTY, 2016 and the ‘W’ mint mark.
Miley Frances Busiek’s depiction of a family of eagles appears on reverses. The design shows a male eagle carrying an olive branch, flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her eaglets. Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST and the coin’s precious metal weight and legal tender face value.
