The U.S. Mint last week didn’t release any collector products but it did remove about four dozen of them from its online catalog and weekly sales report.
With nearly all of them issued in the past two years and most of them having been unavailable for some time, there are no huge surprises in their final sales totals. Some of the more popular departed products include the:
- 2015-W Proof Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coin;
- 2015-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle Coin;
2015-W $50 American Gold Buffalo Proof Coin; - 2015-P Homestead Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin;
- 2015 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set;
- 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set; and
- Rolls and bags of 2014- and 2015-dated America the Beautiful Quarters.
As previously discussed, the 2015-W Proof Gold Buffalo marks a series mintage low for the size at 16,591. In addition, the 2015-W $50 Uncirculated Gold Eagle with ending sales of 6,553 is the second scarcest in size, behind the 2012 release with its sales of 5,829.
The no longer available quarters include all the ones from 2014 and the first two of the five issued in 2015. Their ending sales, along with those of the other products, are in the tables further below.

A number of errors in the tables, two that I remember are: It was Lady Bird Johnson, not Betty Ford Johnson, and one of the 2016 Kennedy half dollar lines is misnamed.
Question: Is there a known reason why some releases with limited mintages show up on the sales just a little short of the published mintages? For example last year’s coin and chronicles show up on the sales to date just shy of the 17,000, 25,000 or 50,000 limit.
Mike –
It is unbelievable, but the U.S. Mint usually takes up to two years to release final, official audited sales figures on their products. Also, a certain percentage of coins & sets are returned by customers
with damaged coins or damaged special packaging & have to be destroyed according to Mint policies.
I bet you will really enjoy the ANA coin show & convention in August in beautiful Anaheim. The U.S. Mint will have a sales booth at the show & you can ask their supervisor your question in person.
Happy collecting Mike in Anaheim!
